Tremestieri Etneo is an Italian municipality and city of the metropolitan city of Catania in the autonomous region of Sicily with 20,261 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Tremestieri Etneo is 10 km north of Catania on the southern slopes of Mount Etna . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture in handicrafts.

The neighboring municipalities are Catania , Gravina di Catania , Mascalucia , Pedara , San Giovanni la Punta , San Gregorio di Catania and Sant'Agata li Battiati .

history

The exact age of the city is unknown. Archaeological finds show that the Tremestieri Etneo area was already inhabited in ancient times . The name may have its roots in the Latin name Triamonasteria . The region was affected several times by lava flows from Etna, for example in the years 122 BC. BC, 1381 and 1408. The earthquakes of 1169 and 1693 destroyed the settlement very severely.

In a papal deed , the De Tribus Monasteriis church was declared a parish in 1446. In 1641 the merchant Andrea Massa acquired the Tremestieri estate, which had previously belonged to Catania, and the title "Duke of Tremestieri". Five years later Massa ceded the title, but not the land ownership, to the nobleman Pietro de Gregorio Buglio. One generation later, through marriage, the title passed to the Rizarri family, who still run it today.

In 1874 the adjective "Etneo" was added to the name of the city of Tremestieri to distinguish it from a city of the same name near Messina . From the 1960s the population of the place grew disproportionately. This is due to several new buildings, including many illegally built houses, first mainly in the fraction Canalicchio, and later in other outskirts of the community.
