Helmut Brandt (born October 24, 1950 in Bardenberg ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 2005 to 2017 he was a member of the German Bundestag .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in Herzogenrath , Brandt did his military service and then completed a law degree at the University of Bonn , which he completed with the first state examination in law. Since the study is the member of the Catholic Fraternity KDStV Novesia Bonn in CV . After his legal clerkship , he also passed the second state examination and has been working as a lawyer in Alsdorf ever since . Brandt is a specialist lawyer for criminal law .

Helmut Brandt is married and has two children.

Political party

Brandt joined the CDU in 1969 and was deputy chairman of the CDU district association Aachen Land from 2002 to 2011.

MP

Brandt was a member of the Alsdorf City Council from 1978 to 1994, where he was also chairman of the CDU parliamentary group until 1994 . From 1999 to 2009 he was also a member of the Aachen district council .

On June 28, 2005, he replaced the resigned MP Karl-Josef Laumann in the Bundestag and was a member of the German Bundestag until September 24, 2017 . In the 18th electoral term he was a full member of the Interior Committee .

Brandt was legal advisor to the CDU / CSU parliamentary group .

Brandt entered the Bundestag via the North Rhine-Westphalia state list after the 2005 Bundestag election. In the 2009 Bundestag election he won the direct mandate in constituency 89 of Aachen with 40.2 percent of the first votes , in 2013 he won the direct mandate in the newly cut Bundestag constituency 88 - Aachen II with 45.6 percent of the first votes , and in 2017 he was defeated there with a deficit of only 733 votes (corresponds to 0.4% of the first votes) of his competitor Claudia Moll (SPD).

Public offices

Brandt was mayor of Alsdorf from 1994 to 1999 .
