Geographical location

The Maulkuppe rises within the Fulda district in the Hessian Rhön Nature Park and in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and in the Milseburger Kuppenrhön natural area . The famous Milseburg mountain is located about 2.3 km to the northeast. On the southern slope of the mountain there are courtyards of the scattered settlement Steinwand , a district of Poppenhausen . Kleinsassen , a district of Hofbieber, is 2.3 km north . About 6 km to the west-northwest is Dipperz , where the summit of the Maulkuppe is also located.

history

In the Holy Week of 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War , a radio station was set up on the muzzle . In this way, German soldiers under the command of Field Marshal Albert Kesselring , who had withdrawn in a train into the Milseburg Tunnel with high-ranking officers, tried to establish contact with the Wehrmacht High Command in order to organize a counter-defense against the advancing Americans.

tourism

Immediately south of the summit, the Fuldaer Haus has been standing since 1926 - the foundation stone was laid in 1924 - a managed refuge of the Rhönklub branch club Fulda in the form of a cylinder at 670 m above sea level with overnight accommodation. Right next to it there is a youth hostel and a youth tent site. The area is made accessible to tourists from the Milseburgweg and other hiking trails of the Rhön Club. The path from Maulkuppe to the east or south-east to Grabenhöfchen is designed as a sculpture path . There are 16 works of art here as a result of three sculptors' meetings between 2001 and 2004. For example, a wing carved from wood was hung from a tree . Another work of art is the giant Mils , which was placed a few meters away. The summit area of Maulkuppe is forested and offers no view. But it can be hiked in 15 minutes. There are views in all directions, for example to Milseburg in the northeast and to Wasserkuppe in the south. On a clear day the view extends to the west as far as the Vogelsberg and the Taunus .
