10,000 Maniacs is a folk-rock band from Georgia , which is active with various ensembles since its founding 1,981th The most famous member was Natalie Merchant , who left the band in 1993 to pursue a solo career. The name of the band is derived from the title of the low-budget horror film Two Thousand Maniacs! .

history

The band was founded as Still Life in Jamestown (New York) in 1981. The founding members were Steven Gustafson (then 23, electric bass ), Dennis Drew (23, keyboards ), Robert Buck (22, guitar ), Terry Newhouse (Buck's ex-wife, vocals ) and Chet Cardinale ( drums ). Gustafson also invited Natalie Merchant (then 18) to vocal support for the group. John Lombardo (28, guitar) was in a band called The Mills at the time , but occasionally played in Still Life and eventually switched permanently. Newhouse and Cardinale left the band after a short time, so that Merchant became a singer. Different drummers came and went. The band changed their name to Burn Victims and eventually 10,000 Maniacs .

As such, they first appeared in September 1981, initially as a cover band. When they got bored of that, they started writing songs themselves. In most cases Merchant was responsible for the lyrics and Lombardo for the music. In the spring of 1982 they recorded the first EP called Human Conflict Number Five , which was followed by a large number of appearances.

In early 1983, drummer Jerry Augustyniak was added. With him the band recorded songs for their debut album Secrets of the I Ching . The album received favorable reviews and was discovered by John Peel , a DJ on BBC Radio 1 in London . The song My Mother the War became a small hit in the UK . 1983 to 1984 the band toured extensively, including to Great Britain. In 1985, 10,000 maniacs signed a recording deal with Elektra Records after Peter Leak became their manager.

1986 Lombardo left the band. The remaining five members recorded the album In My Tribe in Los Angeles , which was more oriented towards pop music and stormed the charts in the USA . Lombardo had meanwhile founded a folk duo called John & Mary with Mary Ramsey .

In 1993, 10,000 maniacs recorded their MTV Unplugged album, but that same year Natalie Merchant announced their split from the band. However, she had announced this internally two years earlier. The remaining members took John & Mary into the band, Ramsey played the viola and sang.

10,000 Maniacs released two more albums in 1997 and 1999 with Mary Ramsey as the singer. In 1997 they made a musical appearance in the series Sabrina - Totally Verhext! . On December 19, 2000, Robert Buck died of liver failure at the age of 42. The band took a break. Gustafson and Drew started a band called Mighty Wallop . Jerry joined Only Human , Lombardo and Ramsey left 10,000 Maniacs in 2002. With Oskar Saville from Rubygrass for vocals, several concerts followed in 2003 .
