Roman Empire

Coin of Constantine (minted 337)

The Roman Emperor Constantine the Great , who has planned a large-scale Persian campaign , dies on May 22nd . Serious unrest broke out in the following months because the emperor's succession was not guaranteed. Whether the murders carried out by high-ranking military personnel after the death of Constantine the Great , to which most of Constantine's male relatives fell victim, still take place in 337 is controversial in research. What is certain is that the sons of Constantine - Constantine II , Constantius II and Constans - will not be proclaimed Augusti until September 9th . Before that, the government apparently pretends that Constantine is still alive. For example, a law of August 2nd is still enacted in Constantine's name. A few months later, at a meeting of the brothers in Viminatium , the brothers divided up the kingdom among themselves. Constantine's part of the empire is Gaul, Britain, Hispania and part of Africa. In addition, due to his age, he was given honorary priority ( senior Augustus ) in the Imperial College. Constantius receives the eastern part of the empire, whereby the Balkan peninsula formerly administered by his murdered cousin Dalmatius falls to Constans, who ruled the western part of the empire with Constantine II.
