Maximilian of Celeia

Maximilianus von Celeia , also Maximilian von Lauriacum or from Lorch or Maximilian vom Pongau (* unknown in Celje ; † around 284 ibid), is said to be according to a tradition from the 11th / 13th centuries. Century gave away his great inheritance to the slaves of his estate and made a pilgrimage to Rome. There Pope Sixtus II sent him back to his homeland in 257 to proclaim his faith there. He was a traveling bishop for 20 years and the first bishop of Lauriacum ( Lorch an der Enns ). He was beheaded during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Numerian .

Maximilian is the second diocesan patron of the Diocese of Passau . His relics have been venerated in the local cathedral since 985. His feast day is October 12th. The Maxlaunmarkt , named after Maximilian, is held annually in Niederwölz .
