Nigrinianus
Nigrinianus ( Nigrinian , with full name probably Marcus Aurelius Nigrinianus ; † 284 ) was a son of the Roman emperor Carinus .
Life
After his birth, Nigrinianus was considered the heir to the throne of his father. However, whether his wife Magnia Urbica or one of the numerous mistresses attributed to him by the (albeit notoriously unreliable) Historia Augusta was the mother is not known. In addition, it cannot be ruled out that Nigrinianus was a son of Paulina, Carinus's sister, and thus “only” his nephew, as the - only surviving - inscription on a statue suggests.
Nigrinianus died in childhood 284 (or early 285 at the latest), probably without having received the title of Caesar during his lifetime . After his death he was raised to divus and appears as such on coins (with the crown of rays).
His father Carinus was defeated in July 285 by Diocletian in the struggle for sole rule.
Remarks
- ↑ CIL 6, 31380 names Divus Nigrinianus, nepos Cari , not filius Carini , as one might expect from the emperor's son.
