Roman Empire
- Imperial crisis of the 3rd century : Postumus consolidates his power as counter-emperor in the west of the empire . The empire known in modern times as Imperium Galliarum includes Northern Gaul, Germania inferior and Superior , Raetia and, since this year, Britain and Hispania . He made Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium ( Cologne ) his capital, set up his own senate, his own consuls and his own Praetorians and minted a large number of coins that were of better quality than those of Emperor Gallienus. He also manages to secure the provinces against the Teutons, for which he is awarded the honorary title Germanicus Maximus .
- The struggle for rule in the Roman Empire spreads to the Balkan provinces. The exact events are incomplete. It is reported that the counter-emperor Macrianus Minor , who is supported by the eastern provinces, sends a division under Piso to defeat the governor of Achaea Valens Thessalonicus , who was loyal to the emperor . Valens proclaims himself opposing emperor, Piso does the same. Both are killed after a short time.
- Autumn: Counter-Emperor Macrianus Minor and his father move west with part of the Orient Army to enforce their rule in Italia. On the border of Thrace , they are placed by the imperial troops, led by either Aureolus or Domitianus . The battle is lost for the usurpers. Macrianus Maior and Macrianus Minor are then killed by their own soldiers.
- After the death of his brother and father, the anti-emperor Quietus loses control of the east of the empire. He withdraws with his troops to Emesa , where he is killed by the locals. Septimius Odaenathus , who remained loyal to Emperor Gallienus, pursues the renegades, defeats the Praetorian prefect Ballista and then takes over the command of the Orient Army on the instructions of the Emperor.
- The prefect of Egypt, Mussius Aemilianus , who had stood on the side of Macianus Minor and Quietus, now proclaims himself counter-emperor in Alexandria . This means that Italia remains cut off from deliveries of grain from Egypt.
Empire of China
