Ulleungdo ([ ulːɯŋdo ], Hangeul : 울릉도 , Hanja : 鬱 陵 島 , Revised : Ulleungdo, McCune-R . : Ullŭngdo, western name: Dagelet ) is a South Korean island in the Sea of Japan .

geography

Ulleungdo is about 120 kilometers from the mainland of the Korean Peninsula and 90 kilometers from the Liancourt Rocks . It is of volcanic origin and therefore rocky and has rugged coasts. In addition to fishing - for squids , among other things - tourism is the main livelihood.

The main town of the island is the port city of Dodong in the southeast, where the ferries to the mainland also dock. The highest point on the island is the Seonginbong with a height of 984 m, the area is about 73.15 km², on which about 10,000 people live.

administration

The island forms the main area of Ulleung County . The district also includes the minor islands and - according to the South Korean view - the Liancourt rocks. The county belongs to the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and is divided into three parishes, which are further subdivided into villages ( ri ).

history

Archaeological finds suggest that the island has been around since the 1st millennium BC. Is populated. The first documented written reference to Ulleungdo can be found in the Samguk Sagi from the year 1145. According to this, the general Ichan Isabu ( Kor.  이사부 이사부 , Hanja  伊 澯 異 斯夫 ) from Silla conquered the island in 512, which had previously been the formed independent empire of Usan-guk .

However, it did not stay with Silla and only became part of Korea for good in 930, when it was annexed by the Goryeo Empire. In the 11th century the island was plagued by raids by pirates of the Jurchen , and in the 14th century by Wokou pirates. After a conflict with Japan over fishing rights around 1690, the Joseon dynasty , which had now taken over, began with an "empty island" policy, which could never be fully enforced. It was only officially ended in 1881 and settlers were sent back to the island.

nature

The island has several endemic species of flora , including Fagus multinervis , Sorbus ulleungensis , Lilium hansonii and giant liverwort .

tourism

The main tourist activities include hiking and fishing. There are regular boat tours that start from Dodong and circumnavigate the coast of the island and on which the diverse rock formations of the island and the island of Jukdo are presented. Other well-known tourist sites include Seonginbong and Bongnae Falls.
