Dangjin ( 당진 ; pronunciation: [taŋ.dʑin]) is a city in the Chungcheongnam-do administrative unit in South Korea . It has the same Hanja name (唐 津市) as the city of Karatsu ( Japanese唐 津市, - shi ) in the Japanese prefecture of Saga .

geography

Dangjin is located on the west coast of South Korea. The city limits are bordered by the Yellow Sea to the north, the Seosan administrative unit to the west, the Yesan administrative unit to the southeast and the Asan administrative unit to the east . By sea, it shares borders with Incheon , Pyeongtaek and Hwaseong . Dangjin has an area of ​​664.13 km² and is divided into three dong (districts), two eup (boroughs) and nine myeon (boroughs, rural parishes ). 117,400 people live there. 176.8 inhabitants live on one square meter. The name means something like " Tang ferry" and refers to Dangjin's historical role as an important link to mainland China.

history

The name was first used in the Joseon Dynasty . Between 1413 and 1895 it was called Dangjin-hyeon, a division of Chungcheong Province. Through the merger of part of Jeongmi-myeon to Seosan's Unsan-myeon, the city limits were created from 1973, which are still valid today.

economy

There are several steel mills in Dangjin, including some from Hyundai Hysco and Hyundai INI Steel. The factories mostly get their raw materials from the port of Dangjin. The seawater-cooled coal-fired power station in Dangjin is one of the most powerful in the country.

Dangjin Waemok Village Sunrise Festival

Dangjin Waemok Village Sunrise Festival is a festival that is celebrated in Dangjin to reflect on the past year and to celebrate the beginning of the new year. One wishes for success for the next year as soon as the sun rises over the horizon. The festival is celebrated at the northern tip of Chungcheongnam-do Province, at Waemok Village and Hanjin Hannaru. It is also celebrated on the north coast of Dangjin, the Ria coast. The sunrise is easy to see there. The sunrise can also be seen well on the summit of Seongmunsan Mountain.
