About this picture

Jeollabuk-do (North Jeolla) is a province in the southwest of South Korea . In the north it borders on Chungcheongnam-do , in the east on Gyeongsangnam-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do . The province is bounded by Jeollanam-do to the south and the Yellow Sea to the west .

geography

The Noryong Mountains divide the province. The eastern half is a high plateau, the western half a plain. Four rivers flow through the plains to the west: Somjin , Mankyong , Tongjin, and Kum .

There are four national parks in the Jeollabuk-do area. In the southeast of the Jirisan National Park, which also extends over the provinces of Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do . To the south is the Naejangsan National Park, which extends into Jeollanam-do Province . In the northwest of the Byeonsanbando National Park and in the northeast of the Deogyusan National Park, which extends into the province of Gyeongsangnam-do .

economy

The coastal plain is one of the largest granaries in South Korea . Besides rice , cotton , barley , hemp and mulberries are also grown for paper production. Livestock is also important and is mainly practiced on the high plateau in the east.

In 1960 the Honam Highway was built, which connects the capital Jeonju with Daejeon and Seoul in the north and Gwangju in the south. There was also a connection for Iksan (formerly Iri) and the port city of Gunsan .

An industrial and free trade zone ( Gun-Jang ) was established in the coastal region, with large corporations such as Daewoo and Hyundai settling here . Economic growth in Jeollabuk-do, which was previously poorly developed, is one of the highest in South Korea. There are partnerships with the states of Washington and New Jersey in the USA, the prefectures of Kagoshima and Ishikawa in Japan and the province of Jiangsu in China.
