Life

High altar in the Cathedral of Trento

Domenico came from a family of stonemasons and sculptors who had been working in Castione in Trentino since the end of the 16th century . He was the older brother of Antonio Giuseppe Sartori , who also worked as a sculptor and architect, with whom he worked in his father's workshop.

In 1730 he and his father Rocco were commissioned to build a new high altar in the Cathedral of Trento . Based on a design submitted by Cristoforo Benedetti in 1727, he worked on this altar together with his brother from 1738. In 1742, after the death of his father, he took over the management of the workshop in Castione. During this time he worked closely with Antonio Giuseppe and created a whole series of main and side altars in different colored natural stones , most of which were quarried in his own quarries on Monte Giovo near Castione.

It is not always possible to clearly determine who of the two brothers designed the altars and who carried them out. If an inscription on the high altar of the cathedral in Trento mentions Domenico as the architect and his brother as the sculptor, this division of tasks was not always strictly adhered to. In some cases, Domenico also used models and plans by other sculptors and architects in his work, such as the works of Jacopo Antonio Pozzo , the younger brother of Andrea Pozzo . Differences in the work of the two brothers were already evident at the end of the 1730s. Antonio Giuseppe liked to play with high-contrast plays of light and shadow as well as pronounced sculptural features, Domenico preferred more calm lines.

The latter also worked on projects on his own, such as the main altar of the parish church in Giovo or the side altars that he made in the council church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Trento, which were originally in another church that has now been abandoned. Domenico was mostly active in what is now the province of Trento, but his work can also be found on the east coast of Lake Garda belonging to the province of Verona , such as in the parish church in Malcesine for which he built the main altar and the rectory .

In the mid-1740s, the two brothers finally parted ways. Domenico's work as an architect includes the new construction of the Monte Albano pilgrimage church in Mori , which he completed around the middle of the 18th century. Around 1760 he retired from working life. He died in 1781 in Vò Casaro, the birthplace of his wife, whom he married in 1736.
