The two structures of the Palazzo Contarini Michiel

Palazzo Contarini Michiel a San Barnaba is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Dorsoduro sestiere , overlooking the Grand Canal between Ca 'Rezzonico and the Palazzetto Stern and near the Church of San Barnaba .

history

The Contarini family had the palace built in the 16th century; then it fell to the Michiel family without any knowledge of the reason or the exact date of the transfer of ownership. Presumably it consisted of two separate structures from the start. The two palaces were connected in the 18th century (probably on behalf of Teresa Corner Duodo ); the mansion was first owned by the Donà family and then by the sculptor Valentino Besarel . The latter personally took care of a meticulous restoration. In 2009 the property was carefully restored again by the architect Giovanni Battista Rubin .

description

The main facade to the Grand Canal consists of two clearly distinguishable facades and lacks architectural continuity in the stylistic details, e.g. B. the window layout. The most remarkable elements of the inhomogeneous composition are undoubtedly the two multiple windows, which are almost next to each other: the left building shows a triple window shifted to the right from the center, the right building a lower lying quadruple window shifted to the left from the center. There is a large private garden behind the house. The interiors on the mezzanine and main floors of the palace on the left are decorated with stucco work in the neo-coco style, which dates from the beginning of the 20th century and whose author is unknown.
