Sanghamitra Mohanty (born April 1, 1953 in Cuttack , India , † July 1, 2021 in Bhubaneswar ) was an Indian computer scientist . She was Professor of Computer Science at Utkal University from 1986 to 2011 . Her research areas were mainly in the areas of artificial intelligence , language processing , image processing and natural language processing.

life and work

Mohanty had an academic qualification as a master of science degree in physics and a doctorate in it ( Ph.D. ). From 1986 to 2011 she was a lecturer, lecturer and professor of computer science at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar . From 2008 to 2011 she was the director of women's studies there. She then was Vice Chancellor of North Orissa University in the regional city of Baripada in the Indian state of Odisha until 2014 , where she introduced technology-oriented new courses in computer science, engineering and nanoscience and technology.

Since 2012, under her direction, the North Orissa University Journal of Science and Technology and the North Orissa University Journal of Social Sciences have been published for the first time with ISSN numbers, and the laboratories of various teaching departments have been equipped with the latest equipment. All departments received grants to facilitate study and research as well as “Smart Class Rooms”. She organized an international workshop with Lund University in Sweden and in 2012 made North Orissa University a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities , a member of the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) for Fulbright Fellowship and a member of the Erasmus Mundus project from Lund University and the European Union.

Sanghamitra Mohanty owned 13 rights to Indian language technology solutions under Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). As part of her academic work, she visited a number of institutions in India and abroad, including as visiting professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Princeton University in the USA. More than 160 of her research papers have been published in international journals and conference reports. As part of the projects funded by the Indian government for the computerization of the official language of Odisha, she carried out extensive research on the technology of the Indian language in general and the Odia language. Since 2016 she has been President of the Odisha Bigyan Academy . In 2019 she was speaker at the 24th International Symposium Frontiers of Research in Speech and Music in Kanpur .

She died of COVID-19 on July 1, 2021 at the age of 68 .

Honors

Mohanty received the Odisha Bigyan Academy's Samanta Chandrashekhar Award in 2012 for her contribution to engineering and technology. She is a member of the UK 's Women's Engineering Society (FWES).
