Palazzetto Stern: Facade to the Grand Canal

Palazzetto Stern is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Dorsoduro sestiere with a view of the Grand Canal between the Palazzo Contarini Michiel a San Barnaba and the Palazzo Moro a San Barnaba , opposite the Palazzo Grassi .

history

The building that is now called the Palazzetto Stern has very old origins. The original, Venetian- Byzantine , two-story structure was built in the 15th century by order of the Malpaga family . After it had fallen into disrepair over the centuries, the Stern family bought it in the early years of the 20th century and decided to renovate and add to it from scratch. So commissioned Ernesta de Hierschel Stern (1854-1926), aunt of Lionello de Hierschel Minerbi , the 1906-1935 owner of Ca 'Rezzonico , was in the years 1909 to 1912 the architect Giuseppe Berti and especially the architect and decorator Raffaele Mainella with the completion of the project, with which she determined the present-day view of the building to which she gave the name of her husband, the French banker Louis Stern (1840–1900). The two artisans used old materials for the renovation and expansion of the existing building. Today the building, which originated as a private residence, has been converted into a luxury hotel after careful restoration.

description

The Palazzetto Stern is an elegant example of neo-Gothic architecture that fits the poetry that featured the construction of buildings such as the Casa dei Tre Oci (by Mario de Maria ) and the Villa Hériot (also by Raffaele Mainella ), both on the years Giudecca Island , certain.

From the outside, the palace is an echo of the Venetian Gothic , conveyed by the avant-garde that had established itself in the first years of the 20th century and was also brought to Venice by Stern, who was active in the world of art collecting: Um One floor above the old building, the Palazzetto Stern reveals itself with completely decorated facades. Nevertheless, the greatest attention was paid to the façade facing the Grand Canal, which is asymmetrical: the ground floor opens onto a terrace with a view of the canal and neo-Gothic balusters , which is followed by a vestibule with wooden architraves that are Gothic Pillars are supported, showing keel arch motifs; under the vestibule there are three-pass single windows and the portal with a large half-relief made of marble above it, moved to the left from the center .

The two main floors have a similar window layout: on the left a triple three-pass window and on the right a double three-pass window. The differences lie in the middle, where there is a single window on the first main floor, while the second main floor shows another double window with a protruding balcony and balusters. In addition, on the facade there are formals and half-reliefs, one of which is larger than the others and is set in an aedicule depicting Saint George with the dragon .

Must be analyzed, in addition to an extension to the Grand Canal with a short and the right front brick wall , topped by battlements and equipped with two single trefoil windows, is characterized by a large, original window in the second floor on which a dormer window with ogival is .

Inside, materials from the old building and other buildings have also been reused, such as the stone decorations, sculptures and columns that are particularly old. One has to point out the frescoes and mosaics from the 20th century, thanks in particular to Raffaele Mainella .
