Lazzaro Mocenigo (* 1624 in Venice , † 1657 in the Aegean Sea ) was a Venetian admiral . He came from the Venetian patrician family Mocenigo .

Lazzaro Mocenigo began his career in the fleet as a young volunteer on the galleys of Tommaso Morosini , under Admiral Luigi Leonardo Mocenigo he himself became a galley in command. In the war for possession of the Cretan city of Kandia , which the Republic of Venice fought with the Ottoman Empire from 1645 to 1669 , he defeated the Turks on the island of Paros on July 10, 1651 . In 1655 he routed a Turkish fleet near the Dardanelles . In 1656 he took part in the Battle of the Dardanelles under Admiral Lorenzo Marcello , in which he lost an eye. A year later he struck a pirate fleet in the Aegean Sea . Lazzaro Mocenigo fell on July 16, 1657 in another naval battle near the Dardanelles, which he fought against the fleet of Grand Vizier Köprülü Mehmed Pascha . A Turkish cannonball hit the powder magazine of his ship, which then exploded and killed a thousand men, including Mocenigo.
