Lorenzo Marcello
Lorenzo Marcello (* 1603 in Venice ; † June 26, 1656 with the Dardanelles ) was a Venetian admiral .
He was the son of Andrea Marcello di Giacomo and Elena Priuli. In 1641 he took part in a sea battle in the Adriatic against the fleet of Pope Urban VIII . In 1655 he led the fleet against the Ottomans in place of Admiral Francesco Morosini .
In 1656, during the war for Crete , he defeated the Turkish fleet together with Maltese units in the Battle of the Dardanelles . It was the greatest victory of the Republic of Venice since the Battle of Lepanto . Lorenzo Marcello lost his life during the battle. Admiral Badoer took command.
