Scala del Bovolo

The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is a Gothic palace in Venice in the San Marco district near Campo Manin.

This palace became famous for its spiral staircase, which went down in art history as the Scala del Bòvolo (in the Venetian dialect the emphasis is on the first ò). The palace is a building from the late 15th century belonging to the Contarini family . The facade overlooks the Rio di San Luca. In 1499, the then head of the house, Pietro Contarini, decided to have the builder Giovanni Candi (according to other sources Giorgio Spavento) build a spiral staircase in the new Renaissance style, in the unusual shape of a series of loggias that are located in open rising arches . This concept is unusually complex for an external staircase and was entirely new in this way. The staircase ends in a domed room that offers an excellent view of the entire city.

In the 19th century, the palace served as a hotel for a while and is now home to an educational institute.
