biography

Monsignor Contarini was born in 1450 and, as a former canon of San Salvatore, was appointed Patriarch of Venice by the Venetian Senate on November 17, 1508 . After ratification by the consistory , it was consecrated on February 5, 1509 by the Archbishop of Split , Monsignor Zane.

During his service he fought stubbornly against the corruption of the clergy and for the reform of the nunneries, which should reverse the secularization of the monasteries. Through his strict life, he gained a reputation for holiness.

Among his works, the reconstruction of the patriarchal palace, which he sponsored, should be mentioned.

He died on November 7, 1524 of tuberculosis , a disease he had been suffering from for some time.

A few years after his death he was beatified .
