Joachim Schmidt (diplomat)

Joachim Schmidt (born February 27, 1955 in Wuppertal ; † June 12, 2017 in Hattingen ) was a German diplomat and ambassador to Ethiopia since 2014 .

After graduating from high school , he studied economics , history and international relations at the Ruhr University Bochum , University of California, Los Angeles and the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Bologna and Washington between 1975 and 1983 .

In 1984 he entered the diplomatic service and, after completing his attaché training from 1986 to 1988, initially worked at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn . After working at the embassy in India from 1988 to 1991, he worked again in various areas in the Foreign Office between 1991 and 1999. In 1999 he was head of the Liaison Office for Humanitarian Aid in Skopje for some time before he became head of the German Interest Section at the Japanese Embassy in Belgrade from 1999 to 2000 .

Subsequently, he was Ambassador to Yugoslavia between 2000 and 2002 and then until 2005 Head of the Human Resources Department in Berlin . After that he was inspector in the central department of the Foreign Office from 2005 to 2008.

From July 17, 2008 to June 2011, he succeeded Michael Georg Schmunk , Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

From 2011 to 2014 he headed the Foreign Service Academy in Berlin .

On August 20, 2014, he handed over his credentials to the President of the Republic of Ethiopia, Mulatu Teschome , whereby he was officially accredited as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ethiopia as the successor to Lieselore Cyrus .
