The Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education at the University of Kiel (IPN) is one of the leading scientific institutes in the field of science education and didactics in Germany. It is a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Community and is based in Kiel . Although it does not belong to the Christian Albrechts University , there are close relationships between the institute and Kiel University (so-called affiliated institute ).
The task of the institute, which was founded in 1966 by Karl Hecht , the first director until 1971, with the participation of Werner Kroebel , is to promote and further develop science education. The projects carried out by the institute include the studies PISA 2003 and 2006, SINUS, ChiK, LeLa, LLL, LUV, System Erde and the video study as well as GLOBE Germany . The IPN is also involved in the biology , chemistry and physics Olympiad and the federal environmental competition as well as in the German preliminary round for the International Junior Science Olympiad .
The institute employs around 150 full-time employees and is divided into six departments:

In 2016 the IPN Kiel celebrated its 50th anniversary.
