Ilka Parchmann (* 1969 ) is a German chemistry teacher and university lecturer .

Life

From 1988 to 1993 Ilka Parchmann studied chemistry and biology for teaching at grammar schools at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg and completed her studies with the first state examination. In February 1994 she began her dissertation on the greenhouse effect ("Topics of the Global Challenge in Chemistry Classes") with Walter Jansen in the field of chemistry didactics and received her doctorate in March 1997 with distinction. She passed her second state examination for teaching at grammar schools in chemistry and biology in 1999 at the Wilhelmshaven study seminar . After completing the habilitation procedure in chemistry didactics at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, she was offered a position at the Free University of Berlin in 2002 , which she refused. In the same year, she was offered a position at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , which she accepted. There she was C3 professor for two years until 2004, then as W3 professor for didactics of chemistry until 2009 in Oldenburg and since October 2009 W3 professor for didactics of chemistry at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. There she became Vice President in June 2014.

Since 1995 she has been writing for the trade journal Chemkon , of which she was editor-in-chief until 2017.

Since 2016, she and Olaf Köller have been spokesperson for the Kiel Science Outreach Campus (KiSOC), which aims to promote collaboration between university and non-university research. The KiSOC is one of seven newly approved Leibniz ScienceCampi in Germany in 2016 . They enable Leibniz institutions and universities to collaborate on a thematic focus in the sense of an equal, complementary, regional partnership.

Honors

In 1996, Parchmann received the Manfred and Wolfgang Flad Prize from the chemistry class of the Society of German Chemists .

In 2011 Parchmann was awarded the main prize of the Polytechnic Prize of the Polytechnic Society Foundation for her teaching concept chemistry in context . In 2018, Ilka Parchmann received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University in Sweden.

The University of Umeå honors Ilka Parchmann's commitment to chemistry education and her efforts to establish international networks. From 2011 to 2015 she was visiting professor at the Department of Science and Mathematics Education at Umeå University. Between 2014 and 2018, the chemistry teacher and her research team at the IPN carried out a research project at the Swedish university, which was funded by the Swedish Research Council. The aim of the project was to compare teaching-related and structural differences between the two school systems. For this purpose, students in grades 5 to 11 in both countries were examined with regard to their cognitive, metacognitive and motivational development. On the initiative of Ilka Parchmann, the BildungsHanse was created, a project that is located between Nordic universities. This joint project helps to develop an understanding of similarities and differences between different education systems and in the training of teachers in different countries.

The laudation at the awarding of the honorary doctorate also highlighted the fact that Parchmann has rendered outstanding services not only to the Department of Science and Mathematics Education, but also to the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Umeå University of Education.
