Georg Nöbeling (born November 12, 1907 in Lüdenscheid ; † February 16, 2008 in Rosenheim ; full name August Georg Nöbeling ) was a German mathematician .

life and work

Born and raised in Lüdenscheid, Nöbeling studied mathematics and physics at the University of Göttingen from 1927 and at the University of Vienna from 1929 . There he did his doctorate in 1931 under Karl Menger on a generalization of the embedding theorem, the representation of which in three-dimensional space is known as the Menger sponge .

Nöbeling worked for Menger as an assistant until 1933, where he worked with Kurt Gödel , Franz Alt , Abraham Wald , Olga Taussky-Todd and others in Menger's Mathematical Colloquium . In 1933 he became Otto Haupt's assistant in Erlangen; after completing his habilitation in 1935, he was appointed associate professor in 1940 and full professor in 1942 at the University of Erlangen . His main focus was analysis , topology and geometry . In 1968/69 he solved Specker's problem through Abelian groups . The Nöbeling room is named after him.

As dean (1950–1952) of the natural sciences faculty, as rector (1961–1963) and as construction consultant until his retirement in 1976, he played a key role in university self-administration. In particular, he shaped the planning of the technical faculty and the merger with the Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences to form the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

1953 and 1955 he was chairman of the German Mathematicians Association ; from 1959 on he was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1965 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit.
