Voss studied mathematics and physics at the Polytechnic in Hanover , Göttingen and Heidelberg from 1864 to 1868 , among others with Hermann von Helmholtz and Gustav Kirchhoff . During his studies he was a member of the 1864 Schwarzenburg Bund - connection Burschenschaft Germania Göttingen . After the teaching examination in Göttingen, he received his doctorate there in 1869 (with Alfred Clebsch ). Then he became a high school professor near Hanover. In 1873 he completed his habilitation in Göttingen.

In 1875 he was an associate professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1879 he was at the Technical University of Dresden and from 1885 at the Technical University of Munich , where he held a chair for mathematics. From September 1, 1891 he was a full professor of mathematics at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Würzburg , where Friedrich Prym shared the management of the mathematical seminar with him. He regarded the time in Würzburg, where he also carried out botanical studies, as the best time of his life. In 1903 he followed a call to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1923 he retired.

Voss dealt with the differential geometry of surfaces and theoretical mechanics.

In 1886 Voss was elected a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , in 1887 of the Leopoldina and in 1901 of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1898 he was President of the German Mathematicians Association . Ludwig Berwald is one of his doctoral students .
