Ludwig Berwald (born December 8, 1883 in Prague , † April 20, 1942 in the Lodz Ghetto / Litzmannstadt ) was an Austrian mathematician of German-Bohemian origin.

Life

His father Max Berwald came from Lyck in East Prussia and was the owner of the renowned Andreschen bookstore at the Powder Tower in Prague. His mother was born Friederike Fischel from Prague, from a Jewish family. From 1893 he attended the kuk grammar school on the Graben in Prague. In 1899 the family moved to Munich, where he worked on k. Luitpold-Gymnasium passed the Abitur. After graduating from high school , Ludwig Berwald studied mathematics in Munich and successfully completed his doctorate with Aurel Voss ( curvature properties of the focal surfaces of a straight beam system and the regular surfaces it contains ). Back in Prague he was able to complete his habilitation at the German University in 1919 .

In 1922 he was appointed associate professor of mathematics and only five years later Berwald advanced to professor there . His main areas of work were the problems of differential geometry and the calculus of geometric variations . Berwald's calculations on the affine area theory in Riemann's geometry and those of the parallel transmission in spaces with general measurement of dimensions attracted particular attention from his colleagues.

Berwald was one of the first to be banned from working after the German occupation. At the age of 58, he was deported to the Lodz / Litzmannstadt ghetto in 1941 together with his wife Hedwig Adler . Ludwig Berwald died of starvation there shortly after the death of his wife on April 20, 1942.
