Stroth studied from 1968 at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , where he 1973 Dieter Held on a theme from the field of finite simple groups doctorate was. From 1973 to 1977 he was an assistant and completed his habilitation in 1976. In 1977 he became a lecturer at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and 1979 at the Free University of Berlin . Since 1994 he has been Professor of Algebra at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

He deals with finite groups, among other things, within the classification program of finite simple groups (and the project of its simplification), the construction of finite simple groups like the hero group, the simplest possible (low-dimensional) representation of finite simple groups and with geometries to sporadic groups (use of diagram geometries in the program for a uniform construction of the sporadic groups).

In the GLS project representing the classification theorem of Daniel Gorenstein , Lyons and Ronald Solomon , he is planned to be the author of a volume (volume 11 on groups with strongly p-embeddable subgroups).

From 2000 to 2001 he was President of the German Mathematicians Association .
