Hermann Witting (born May 29, 1927 in Braunschweig ; † October 5, 2010 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German mathematician who primarily dealt with mathematical statistics .

Life

Witting studied from 1946 at the TU Braunschweig and the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where he graduated in 1951 and received his doctorate in 1953 under Heinrich (Henry) Görtler ( improvement of H. Görtler's difference method for calculating laminar boundary layers ). He then worked as an assistant in Freiburg, where he completed his habilitation in 1957 ( on the influence of streamline curvature on the stability of laminar flows ). In 1958/59 he was on a research fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley and in 1959 a lecturer in Freiburg. After he had already held a substitute professorship at the TH Karlsruhe in 1961 (and was a visiting professor at the ETH Zurich ) he became an associate professor in Karlsruhe in 1962, but in the same year he was still a full professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . From 1972 he was a professor at the University of Freiburg, where he retired in 1992.

The focus of his scientific work was initially on fluid mechanics . From 1958 he turned to mathematical stochastics. By building a fruitful scientific "school" and his textbooks on mathematical statistics, he has significantly promoted the development of this area in Germany.

In 1978 and 1979 he was President of the German Mathematicians Association . In 1981 he became a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , 1991 a corresponding member of the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft and 1968 Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

In 1992 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in recognition of his outstanding services.

His "school" came from the time in Münster Konrad Behnen , Franz-Reinhold Diepenbrock , Hans-Peter Kinder , Olaf Krafft , Joachim Krauth , Georg Neuhaus , Detlef Plachky , Paul Ressel , Martin Schaefer , Norbert Schmitz and Eckart Sonnemann , from Ulrich's time in Freiburg Müller-Funk , Friedrich Pukelsheim and Helmut Rieder .
