Willi Törnig (born February 11, 1930 in Menden (Sauerland) ; † April 2, 2018 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German mathematician who dealt with numerical mathematics . Törnig received his doctorate in 1958 from what was then the Clausthal Mining Academy in Clausthal-Zellerfeld (on the numerical treatment of initial value problems of partial hyperbolic differential equations of the second order in two independent variables), and completed his habilitation in 1962 at Clausthal University of Technology . In 1967 he became a full professor at the RWTH Aachen (and director of the Central Institute for Applied Mathematics at the Jülich nuclear research facility) and from 1972 at the TU Darmstadt .
