Thomas O. Höllmann

Thomas Otfried Höllmann (born February 29, 1952 in Eggenfelden ) is a German sinologist , author and President of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2017 .

Life

Höllmann received his doctorate in Sinology in 1981 and his habilitation in Ethnology in 1986 . He received his first appointment in 1987 from the University of Heidelberg . Visiting professorships have taken him to Beijing (Archaeological Institute of the Academy for Social Sciences), Canberra (Research School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University ), Tempe (Center for Asian Studies, Arizona State University ) and Oxford (Institute for Chinese Studies, University of Oxford ). His research focus lies in the area of cultural history , for the reconstruction of which he uses archaeological and written sources in equal measure.

Until September 2017, Höllmann was Professor of Sinology and Ethnology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Since then he has been the full-time president of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, for which he had previously taken on several tasks (class secretary, vice president, representative in the Scientific Commission of the Union of German Academies of Sciences ). At LMU he was jointly responsible for setting up the graduate school “Forms of Prestige” and the graduate school “Distant Worlds”. Höllmann is, among other things, Vice President of the Union of German Academies of Sciences, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation and a member of the German Archaeological Institute and the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Han Art at the University of Beijing .
