Tom Wahlig

Tom Wahlig (born June 24, 1938 in Münster ) is a German pharmacist .

Career

After graduating from the Kardinal-von-Galen-Gymnasium in 1958 , Wahlig studied pharmacy in Münster. He completed his studies in 1963 with the state examination and received his doctorate in 1966 in pharmaceutical biology on the "gas chromatic analysis of essential oils". In 1959 he joined the Waldeck company in Münster, where he was managing director until 2010.

In 1998 he founded the Tom Wahlig Foundation with the aim of promoting research into the rare disease hereditary spastic spinal paralysis . With the support of the foundation, a disrupted gene that causes the disease has been identified. The foundation is the first of its kind in the world. Formally, it operates under the umbrella of the Ernst Abbe Foundation , but is managed by Tom Wahlig and his family. The Tom Wahlig Foundation awards prizes, grants and organizes symposia at international neurophysiological congresses. In 2018 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his services .
