Mary Virginia Martin (born December 1, 1913 in Weatherford , Texas , † November 3, 1990 in Rancho Mirage , California ) was an American actress and musical singer .

Life

Mary Martin began taking singing lessons when she was twelve years old. In 1929, before her 17th birthday, she married Benjamin J. Hagman. The marriage that resulted in their son, actor Larry Hagman (best known for his role as JR Ewing on the television series Dallas ) in 1931 , was divorced in 1936. She began singing in nightclubs and on the radio in Dallas until she was hired by Paramount Pictures for the film Three Quarter Time on Broadway ( The Great Victor Herbert ) in 1939 . Her second marriage was in 1940 with Richard Halliday, who had a fatal accident on their ranch in Brazil on March 3, 1973. From this marriage in 1941 a daughter, Heller Halliday, was born.

She and her colleague Janet Gaynor had a car accident in 1982 , who died two years later of the long-term effects. Martin died of colon cancer at the age of 76.
