Fritz Kaindl

Fritz Kaindl (born April 23, 1922 in Stockerau ; † September 13, 2015 in Vienna ) was an Austrian cardiologist and university professor.

Life

Fritz Kaindl first attended six classes at the Realgymnasium in Stockerau, after which he switched to middle school in Albertgasse in Vienna-Josefstadt . After graduating from high school, he was drafted into labor and military service, began studying during study holidays and received his doctorate in 1946. He then received training from Franz Brücke at the Pharmacological Institute of the University of Vienna and worked at the II Medical University Clinic with Karl Fellinger , where he introduced, among other things, X-ray cinematography of the arteries and veins. During his studies in Stockholm he received additional training in cardiological examination techniques, in particular in cardiac catheter examinations . He received training in pulmonology at the Hochegg pulmonary healing facility.

In 1957 he completed his habilitation, in 1964 he became professor of cardiology and angiology at the University of Vienna. On January 1, 1968, a separate cardiological university clinic was set up, of which he was director until the end of 1992. In this role he contributed to the establishment of the specialty cardiology in Austria. His students included the later university professors Felix Unger and Otmar Pachinger.

In 1968 he founded the Austrian Cardiological Society and was its first director. In 1971 Kaindl started the health campaign Schach dem Herztod together with ORF Director General Gerd Bacher . The campaign served, among other things, to finance the establishment of heart monitoring stations and laid the basis for the Austrian Heart Fund, whose last honorary president Kaindl was.

Fritz Kaindl was the author of around 250 scientific publications. He died on September 13, 2015 at the age of 93.
