In this he succeeded in Swedish Falun with 30th place for the first time gain of World Cup points. For the 1999/2000 season he was a permanent member of the Italian World Cup squad. However, at the beginning he could not prove his performance improvement from the previous season. In the winter of 2000/01 he started in Beitostølen and was able to finish in the top 20 in the second World Cup race. In the Continental Cup he did not score any points until the end of the season.

At the following individual World Cup in Kuusamo , he was 57th far below his possibilities. He was also unsuccessful at the following World Cups in Clusone and Cogne. The following year he just missed the podium in the same place and finished fourth. In March 2011 he secured his only podium finish of his career in this series with third place in this ski run. Carrara remained a member of the Italian national marathon team after this success.

In March 2012 Carrara started again in three Alpine Cup races in Toblach , but could not run to the top places. In December 2012 he ran his last ski marathon in Livigno for the time being.
