Andreas Maislinger
Andreas Maislinger (born February 26, 1955 in Sankt Georgen near Salzburg ) is an Austrian political scientist .
Live and act
Andreas Maislinger grew up in a country inn in Sankt Georgen near Salzburg. He was strongly influenced by his father Andreas Maislinger sen. as well as his neighbor, the writer Georg Rendl .
From 1982 to 1991 Maislinger worked at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Innsbruck , at the University of New Orleans , at the Humboldt University in Berlin , at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .
Andreas Maislinger is the initiator of the Austrian memorial service . Since his studies he has campaigned for the legal anchoring of this type of military alternative service, which aims to educate people about the Holocaust . He was supported above all by Simon Wiesenthal , Teddy Kollek , Ari Rath , Herbert Rosenkranz , Gerhard Röthler and Karl Pfeifer . On October 10, 1980, at the invitation of Anton Pelinka, Maislinger had the opportunity to present "community service in Auschwitz" in the ORF program "Kreuzverhor" directed by Dolores Bauer . After the realization, the first memorial servant was able to take up his duties in the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum on September 1, 1992. However, in 1997 , Maislinger and Andreas Hörtnagl were voted out of office as chairmen of the Memorial Service Association . So, after a long discussion with the new board of the Memorial Service Association, they founded the Association for Services Abroad, renamed the Association of Austrian Foreign Service in 2005. The memorial service was expanded to include social service and peace service.
engagement
During his studies in Salzburg he was a member of the Austrian Student Union and tried to get Austrian participation in the international youth meeting place Auschwitz . However, Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger had refused to do so on the grounds that an Austrian had nothing to atone for in Auschwitz . Kirchschläger later recognized the positive result of the memorial service carried out by Maislinger . He spent the summer of 1978 in kibbutz Kfar HaHoresh near Nazareth . In 1980 he received his doctorate under Anton Pelinka Dr. phil. with a dissertation on problems of Austrian defense policy . The Auschwitz survivor Jerzy Adam Brandhuber was his confidante during this time. Hermann Langbein informed him about anti-Semitism at the Association of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy in Poland. At the suggestion of Jan Parcer, he called in Austria to support the construction of the Maximilian Kolbe Church in Oswiecim.
In 1986 he was a founding member of the Austrian-Israeli Society of Tyrol and in 1988 on behalf of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights in the GDR. This and previous GDR stays by Maislinger were observed by the Ministry for State Security . With Bishop Kurt Scharf , he campaigned for the release of political prisoners in the GDR. The trip to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, first organized by Maislinger in 1984, is still offered today by the Society for Political Enlightenment . Together with Yaacov Lozowick , he realized the first German-language seminar in Yad Vashem in 1992 .
From 1992 to 2012 Maislinger was the scientific director of the Braunau Contemporary History Days in Braunau am Inn . Mayor Gerhard Skiba had already made this conference proposed by Maislinger possible in 1987.
Until 1996 Andreas Maislinger published columns in the Jüdische Rundschau . After the FPÖ government participation in 2000, Maislinger suggested to the city of Braunau am Inn that they set up a “ House of Responsibility ” in the house where Adolf Hitler was born .
From 2006 Maislinger headed the in Bürmoos held Ignaz-Glaser-Symposium . In August 2006, at Maislinger's invitation , Gunter Demnig laid 13 stumbling blocks for victims of National Socialism in the Braunau am Inn district . As early as 1997, two stumbling blocks for the executed Jehovah's Witnesses Johann and Matthias Nobis were laid in Maislinger's home community.
As an animal rights activist , Andreas Maislinger and Johann Maier were involved in a Swiss cracker sales ban in 2007 .
