Gerhard Skiba (* 1947 ; † March 15, 2019 ) was an Austrian local politician ( SPÖ ). From 1989 to 2010 he was mayor of Braunau am Inn .

Life

After Skiba became a criminal as a result of gambling addiction and for years under false pretenses (expensive operations for allegedly seriously ill family members, etc.) stolen large amounts from acquaintances and friends, he was imprisoned for 30 months by the regional court in Ried im Innkreis in December 2012 , including 10 unconditionally, legally convicted.

At the beginning of his tenure as mayor in 1989, Gerhard Skiba initiated a memorial stone for peace, freedom and democracy. Never again fascism. Admonish millions of dead. in front of the house where Adolf Hitler was born , and he campaigned for a house of responsibility to be set up there. With his support, the annual Braunauer Zeitgeschichte-Tage initiated by Andreas Maislinger were started in 1992 . In 2006 the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig laid four stumbling blocks for Nazi victims in the city of Braunau am Inn at the invitation of Gerhard Skiba . In 2009 a district-wide initiative for the Braunau am Inn Peace District was started with Skiba .

In 2005 Braunau am Inn received, together with the community of Simbach am Inn, the Climate-Star 2004 from the European city network Climate Alliance for a geothermal project .
