Barrandov is a part of the cadastral municipality of Hlubočepy in the Prague 5 district of Prague . It is located on a rock on the left bank of the Vltava and is named after the French geologist and paleontologist Joachim Barrande who worked in Bohemia and who explored trilobites . He is said to have found some of them in the rock face there.

Barrandov was best known for the film studios that were founded there at the beginning of the 20th century . These belonged to the founders, ancestors of the future Czech President Václav Havel , until the Second World War , before they were expropriated.

Most of the Czech and Czechoslovakian film productions were made here, including several Oscar- winning films, such as Kolja (1996).
