The House of Mercy in Seeböckgasse 30a, Vienna-Ottakring

The charitable House of Mercy is one of the largest private care facilities for people in need of care in Austria. In the geriatric nursing hospitals, very old, chronically ill and younger patients with advanced multiple sclerosis or in a vegetative state are intensively cared for. People with severe multiple disabilities (with a high basic need for support) are accompanied and supported by the HABIT-Haus der Barmherzigkeit integration team in shared apartments and day centers.

Historic establishment

The first house opened on July 23, 1875, was the geriatric nursing hospital in Währing in what is now the 18th district of Vienna in Vinzenzgasse. The House of Mercy in Vinzenzgasse had 23 beds. The hospital was donated by the “Brotherhood of the Most Holy Trinity for the Care of Poor Incurable People”, in which Catholic private men under the leadership of Franz Eipeldauer became socially committed.

They entrusted the care to the Order of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent de Paul .

Right from the start, sick people who were previously considered incurable received not only nursing, but also medical care. This fact later made the House of Mercy a model for similar institutions at home and abroad and the "birthplace of geriatrics". The Lainz care home was founded in 1904 based on the model of the House of Mercy. This was visited in 1908 by Ignatz Leo Nascher , a doctor from Vienna who worked at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York . He coined the term “ geriatrics ” based on these institutions .

Numerous personalities visited the house in Vinzenzgasse:

Emperor Franz Joseph I (1900), Cardinal Theodor Innitzer and Princess Elsa von Liechtenstein (1935), Princess Gina von Liechtenstein (née Georgina von Wilczek ) (1970), Cardinal Franz König and Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger (1975), Pope John Paul II . (1983), Princess Marie von Liechtenstein (née Marie Kinsky von Wchinitz and Tettau ) (2004), Cardinal Christoph Schönborn and Mayor Michael Häupl (2005).

On October 12, 2006, the last patient left Vinzenzgasse and moved to the new House of Mercy on Tokiostraße.

care, support

The focus of the interdisciplinary long-term care is the chronically ill or multiple handicapped person with their wishes and needs.

Geriatrics: The geriatric nursing hospitals offer care and medicine around the clock, as well as therapy. The most important care concepts used are: reference care , activating care, validation (according to Naomi Feil), basal stimulation and kinaesthetics . The medical focus is on internal medicine with general geriatrics , palliative medicine , geriatric rehabilitation as well as gerontoneurology and neurological rehabilitation. A comprehensive geriatric assessment is performed upon admission of the patient . In therapy are physiotherapy , physical therapy , occupational therapy , dietetics , music therapy , psychotherapy , clinical psychology , speech therapy , art therapy and animal therapy used.

Care for people with multiple disabilities: HABIT (House of Mercy Integration Team) looks after people with severe disabilities and a high basic need for support in family-like residential communities and day centers. The following concepts are used in daily care work: quality of life through educational and nursing action, comprehensible everyday life, supported communication, language-accompanying sign language , basic stimulation and pedagogically integrated care.
