Edmund Josef Bendl

Edmund Josef Bendl (born February 10, 1914 in Vienna ; † June 2, 1984 in Mürzzuschlag , Styria ) was an Austrian teacher and author. He became known for his efforts to maintain the Sonnblick observatory .

biography

After completing his training, Edmund Josef Bendl initially worked primarily as a freelance writer, but also as a teacher. In 1947 he started teaching and worked as a teacher in a secondary school in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) and later in the Peter Rosegger secondary school in Mürzzuschlag , Styria.

He achieved great fame through his efforts to save the observatory on the Hohe Sonnblick , which should be closed for financial reasons. For this purpose he gave over 200 lectures and wrote the successful book Der Sonnblick ruft , which was also made into a film.

For this achievement he was one of the winners of the Karl Renner Prize in 1952 . On October 7, 1975, the Vienna provincial government decided to award Bendl with the Golden Sign of Merit of the State of Vienna .
