Mattoni Monument (2014)

The Mattoni monument ( Czech Pomník Jindřicha Mattoniho ) stands at the southwest exit from Kyselka in the direction of Karlovy Vary . Since 1914 it has been a reminder of the mineral water entrepreneur and founding father of the health resort Gießhübl-Sauerbrunn , Heinrich von Mattoni . The status under state monument protection was renewed in 1958 and 2013.

History and description

The monument was designed by the Austrian sculptor Edmund von Hellmer and unveiled in April 1914. The life-size statue of Mattoni is made of bronze , the base of white granite , which was originally inscribed with Heinrich Edler von Mattoni 1830–1910 . In 1920 the German first name Heinrich was replaced by the Czech form Jindřich , which was changed in 1938. The German first name and title of nobility Mattonis were removed after 1945 and the memorial survived the following years.

In March 2013, the statue was removed from the base for restoration and was unveiled again on May 14 of the same year (104th anniversary of death).
