Louis Vuitton Foundation
The Louis Vuitton Foundation ( French Fondation d'entreprise Louis Vuitton ) is a private museum opened in Paris in 2014 . It was created on the initiative of Bernard Arnault , CEO of the French luxury goods company Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH). Most works of the 20th century are shown in the museum building planned and built by Frank Gehry . The building is on the edge of the Jardin d'Acclimatation , almost directly on the border with the municipality of Neuilly-sur-Seine .
history
After the foundation was established in October 2006 and the municipal building permit for the museum building was available in August 2007, construction work began in March 2008. The original opening was planned for 2009. The last stone was laid on December 18, 2013, and the opening took place on October 27, 2014. Its original name is Le vaisseau de verre - German: The glass ship . In 50 years it is to become the property of the city.
Suzanne Pagé , who previously headed the Paris Museum of Modern Art for a long time, was appointed curator . The foundation shows works by Ellsworth Kelly , Thomas Schütte , Andy Warhol , Andreas Gursky , Isa Genzken , Olafur Eliasson , Wolfgang Tillmans , Gerhard Richter , Jean-Michel Basquiat , Gilbert & George and Jeff Koons .
building
In front of the facade are twelve elements made of steel, wood and glass that resemble ship sails - the American architect Frank Gehry calls the building built according to his plans "Glass Cloud" with 19 different white room blocks.
There are eleven galleries on 11,000 square meters, an auditorium with 400 seats, several terraces with a view over Paris and a waterfall in the outdoor area. The light comes in through upward facing and clad chimneys, the panes of which break the sunlight and do not guide it directly into the rooms. The glass roofs, which are suspended with minimal movement, take up the material of the Grand Palais . The construction costs are given at 100 million euros.
location
The building is located in the Bois de Boulogne at 8 avenue du Mahatma Gandhi in the 16th arrondissement near the Les Sablons underground station of the Paris Métro . It is a successor to the one-story bowling alley. This made it possible to circumvent the existing building ban.
