from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jardin d'Acclimatation ( ʒaʁdɛ̃ daklimatasjɔ̃ ; German  "Garden of Acclimatization " ) is an amusement park in the 16th arrondissement of Paris . When it opened, plants and animals from overseas colonies were supposed to get used to the French climate.

History of origin

Jardin d'Acclimatation (engraving, Henri Corbel, 1860)

Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hillaires founded the “Société Impériale Zoologique d'Acclimatation” in 1854, through whose initiative the architects Gabriel Davioud and Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps were commissioned in July 1859 to build the Jardin d'Acclimatation . Already on October 6, 1860 he was able to get from Napoleon III. to be opened. Isidore's son Albert Geoffroy Saint-Hillaires was initially vice director, from 1865 zoo director. Initially, the park served as a botanical and zoological educational and recreational area. From 1863 onwards there was the world's second public aquarium. The little train ( French petit train ) has been driving through the park since 1878. From 1877 the park was also home to the "Jardin d'Acclimatation Antropologique", in which the then park director Geoffroy de Sainte Hilaire had people from the colonies at that time, especially from Africa, exhibit in a people show ; a practice that should draw millions to the park for the next 25 years. The palmarium, opened in 1893, housed birds. On July 4, 1898, Alberto Santos Dumont flew the “Brasil” hydrogen balloon in the Jardin d'Acclimatation and rose more than 200 times with this balloon. The balloon had a diameter of six meters and a volume of 113 m³. He needed 113 m² of Japanese silk for his cover, the cover weighed 3.5 kg. The first attractions appeared in 1926.

In October 2016, the joint venture between the LVMH group and the Compagnie des Alpes received a concession as operator for 25 years from the city of Paris . The renovations, which have been ongoing since September 2017, were completed in May 2018. The opening of the park with 40 attractions (including 17 new ones) took place on June 1, 2018.

Attractions

The 19 hectare children's park combines a landscape and leisure park with cultural events. The attractions are accessible to everyone, to children or only to adults. There is a miniature train, an equestrian center, pony rides, a bird house ( French La Grande Volière ), a theater ( French Théâtre du Jardin ), puppet theater ( French Théâtre de Guignol ), since 2018 the Kinetorium ( French Cinéma interactif ) and a boat trip of 5 kilometers on the "enchanted river" ( French rivière enchantée ) through a nature reserve. In addition, a mirror cabinet, free play areas and roller coasters (in the French Village des Manèges ), the small Normandy farm ( French La Petit Ferme normande ) with its rare animal species and a Japanese farm ( French La Maison de Kiso ) provide entertainment.

location

The Jardin d'Acclimatation , which still belongs to the city of Paris, is bordered by the Bois de Boulogne and the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine . The park can be reached by metro line 1 from the Les Sablons stop . The "Petit Train" drives those interested in the park from Porte Maillot .
