biography

Rudolf Polanszky was born in Vienna in 1951. Since 1976 he has been working as a freelance artist with the film To a Semiology of the Senses and the first conceptual works such as “Schweinsfettzeichnung” (pig fat drawings). From the observation of various artistic procedures, he developed various strategies in this first concept group to circumvent “externally determined”, unconscious controls of behavior. The apparent freedom of decision seemed dubious and dependent on established schemes. By restricting to methods, the structure of “process-dependent” results should be examined and formulated. This work area included the concepts of, among other things, “Koma”, the “Spring-Spring Drawings” and the “Seated Pictures” 1983–1985. Overlapping these concepts were works on S-8 film, video and multimedia collages, such as the already mentioned “Semiology of the Senses” in 1976, “The Musical Monkey” in 1979, “Sprungfedern-Demo” 1983, “Koma” 1983, “Memory and Music / the musical monkey II ”1999,“ piece for animals / brain mythology / the musical monkey III ”, later programmatic videos for projects such as“ Models for transaggregate structures ”2007, or“ Hyperbolic spaces ”2010.

Polanszky's concepts such as transformation, non-linearity, symmetries, etc., introduced into his art, relate to the science-like relationship of his theoretical work. Ideas such as “ad hoc syntheses” and art as part of evolution illuminate the view of his working methods and intentions. The consistent evolution of his work from the early "pig fat drawings", "animal stamp images" (structures from animal tracks), "foil folds" to the "reconstructions" of the 1990s culminates in the development of the already object-like, three-dimensional image works on the objects, sculptures and installations such as the “Hypertransforms Sculptures” or the “Hyperbolic Spaces”.

From the methodological approaches, the work on transformative, structural aspects of topologies developed in the 1990s , which led to the development of "translinear reconstructions". The two-dimensional concept of "surfaces" was undermined in the "Reconstructions" from 1995 onwards by non-linear processes such as layering and deep structure transformations and, via the three-dimensional "folds" etc., led to the concepts of "hyperbolic spaces" and " hypertransform sculpture ”.

The current focus of work is on the further development of the idea of translinear processes up to the recent occupation with "prim spaces" on the basis of multidimensional transformations and symmetry structures as well as their alter ego , the "negative spaces".

Rudolf Polanszky's artistic activity began in 1976 with his “pig fat pictures” and the hand-painted Super-8 film On a Semiology of the Senses . With the pig fat pictures, he was one of the Viennese actionists who experimented with different liquids. This was followed by the “spring pictures” from the 80s, during the creation of which the artist hopped on a spring, holding a paint brush, thus making the balancing act between the dynamics of the spring and his own physical historicity visible. At the end of the 1990s he began the “Reconstructions” series, a detailed analysis of various materials such as paint, fabric, plastic, wood and acrylic glass.
