Messensee's work occupies a special position in Austrian contemporary art and cannot be assigned to any group or style. His art is representational. The subject - almost exclusively the female body and parts of it - is, however, abstracted by ciphers and abbreviations. Messensee's art is shaped by epistemological reflections. From the 80s to the beginning of the 90s, Messensee dealt extensively with Velázquez , and in 1993 Messensee's Infants were shown in the Art History Museum alongside those by Velázquez.

Trivia

The Nobel Prize speech by Elfriede Jelinek , which had this recorded instead of a personal appearance in Stockholm , was held against the background of a picture of Messensee.
