Bank Austria Art Forum Vienna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien is an exhibition center at Freyung 8 in Vienna's 1st district , Inner City . The eponymous Bank Austria is the main sponsor of the art forum. The former bank building has been owned by Signa Holding since 2010 and has also housed the Constitutional Court since August 2012 (entrance Renngasse 2; this was given the address Freyung 8 on the occasion of the VfGH relocation). In 2020, the Art Forum states on its website that it will be frequented by 250,000 to 300,000 visitors per year.

history

The Bank Austria Art Forum on the Freyung

The neoclassical building at Freyung 8, at the corner of Renngasse 2, was built between 1914 and 1921 as a bank building for the Österreichische Creditanstalt für Handel und Gewerbe according to designs by architects Ernst Gotthilf and Alexander Neumann . In 1980 the building was owned by the Länderbank , which just celebrated its 100th anniversary. On the occasion of this anniversary and at the suggestion of the actor Heinz Conrads , exhibitions were shown for the first time in the empty former ticket halls. The first show, Departure into Modernism , was seen by around 28,000 visitors.

When other exhibitions were also successful, the then Länderbank general director Franz Vranitzky decided to make this temporary cultural facility a permanent establishment - under the name Länderbank-Kunstforum and headed by Klaus Albrecht Schröder (now director of the Albertina ).

In 1988, the architect Gustav Peichl was commissioned to renovate the art forum; the reopening took place in March 1989. Soon afterwards, the new owner, Bank Austria, renamed the institution Bank Austria Kunstforum . From the end of 1992 to the beginning of 1993, the building was rebuilt again and the exhibition area doubled, as the rooms could no longer cope with the large number of visitors.

2002–2008 the exhibition center was called BA-CA Kunstforum , as the owner operated as Bank Austria Creditanstalt .

In April 2005, the vault in the Bank Austria Kunstforum was opened in a former vault in the building . Young, international art is presented here, but the safe also sees itself as a space for art education and intellectual debate. The design was based on designs by the architekturladen , which had already redesigned the museum shop in 2002. In March 2008, as a result of the sale of Bank Austria to the UniCredit Group, it was renamed Bank Austria Kunstforum .

Ingried Brugger has been the director of the Kunstforum since 2000 . The exhibition area is 1,120 m², in 2011 around 250,000 visitors were counted. (With 223,879 visitors, the Bank Austria Kunstforum was 20th among the most visited sights in Vienna in 2008. ) The Kunstforum presents changing exhibitions with a focus on classic modern painting , the avant-garde of the post-war period and contemporary art.

UniCredit Bank Austria AG sold the building in which the art forum is located to the Tyrolean Signa Holding at the beginning of 2010 . As it became known in spring 2010, the art forum should therefore move to premises in the nearby Seitzergasse in autumn 2011. The move was canceled in December 2010.

On August 20, 2012, the Constitutional Court , relocated from the Bohemian Court Chancellery , started operations in the building; the entrance to the court is around the corner at the former address Renngasse 2, now known as Freyung 8.

Bank Austria art collection

The foundation stone of the collection was laid by the Central Savings Bank of the Municipality of Vienna, which founded an art fund in 1956 as part of its 50th anniversary and continuously endowed it. The task of the fund was to support young and not yet established artists in their careers through project funding. Among those sponsored in the first two decades are numerous painters who later became internationally known, such as Arik Brauer , Ernst Fuchs and Maître Leherb .

In 1991, the Länderbank collection was merged with the art collection of the predecessor institution of UniCredit Bank Austria AG, the Zentralsparkasse.

The credit institute Creditanstalt-Bankverein , founded in 1855, was merged with Bank Austria in 2002, and on August 12, 2002 the collections of what was then Bank Austria merged with the one that Creditanstalt had started in the early 1970s.

The Fotografis Collection is a collection founded by Bank Austria in 1976 of over 1000 photographs from the pioneering days of photography in the 19th century. It contains specimens in the style of pictorialism and straight photography through to experimental positions of the avant-garde and contemporary contributions.

In 2009 the collection was given on permanent loan to the Photography Collection at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg.
