Matthias Brandes (* 1950 in Bochum ) is a contemporary German painter .

Life

Brandes is the nephew of the Hamburg sculptor Gerhard Brandes . His family moved from his place of birth Bochum to Frankfurt / Main in 1956 and to Hamburg in 1961. In Hamburg he attended the Rudolf Steiner School . From 1969 Brandes studied painting, art education and art history at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and at the University of Hamburg , among others with Gotthard Graubner . From 1979 and after the second state examination he devoted himself exclusively to painting in Hamburg and at times with Meolo in Veneto . There he married in 1984. The artist has two children. He has been widowed since 2007.

The focus of the work of Brandes is on the theme of the "house" as an archetype and metaphor of human existence. Since 2007, Brandes has increasingly concentrated on a figuration of mainly female figures that was widespread in Italian painting of the Quattrocento and was inspired in particular by Piero della Francesca (1420–1492). Brandes stands in the tradition of Italian classical modernism with Mario Sironi and Massimo Campigli . Brandes is also subject to the influence of magical realism (ital. Realismo magico ) by Felice Casorati and metaphysical painting ( pittura metafisica ) by Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà . The anti-modernist work of Balthus also had a great influence on Brande's painting, as did the decontextualization that can be found in part in René Magritte .

Brandes took part in the first realism triennial in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin. In 1993 Brandes finally moved to Meolo in Italy. In 1996 he took part in the second realism triennial “The Power of Images” organized by the Artists' Association in Germany in Berlin. Many of Brandes' works are in public and private collections, including those of Deutsche Telekom , BP Germany , UniCredit Banca, Civico Museo Parisi Valle / Maccagno / Varese /, Pinacoteca Provincia di Bari
