Gerhard Brandes (artist)
Gerhard Brandes (born July 7, 1923 in Frankfurt an der Oder ; † July 10, 2013 in Groß Flottbek in Hamburg ) was a German sculptor .
life and work
Brandes first studied in Berlin and as a master class student in Vienna. From 1949 he studied with Edwin Scharff and Gerhard Marcks at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts . From 1976 until his retirement, Brandes was a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg.
Brandes lived and worked until he was 90 in Hamburg , where many of his works can be found in public spaces. Among them is the sculpture Maritime made of chased copper, which has stood on the Altona balcony near the Altona town hall since 1965 .
Brandes' nephew is the Italian painter Matthias Brandes .
