Basquiat is an American fiction film by the painter and director Julian Schnabel from 1996 that portrays the life of the American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat .
action
The film tells the life story of the artist, who was born in New York in 1960 as the son of a Haitian and a Puerto Rican , from his beginnings as an unknown and homeless graffiti artist with the pseudonym "SAMO", his slow rise in the New York art scene and his acquaintance with Andy Warhol to his psychological decline due to drug use, which culminated in his untimely death at the age of 27.
Reviews
Roger Ebert praised the film in the Chicago Sun-Times of August 16, 1996 as the “self-confident, poetic film debut” of the painter Julian Schnabel and emphasized in particular the intimate knowledge and authentic representation of the New York art scene of the 80s. Wright's portrayal of the artist is described as "opaque", almost "mystical". Ebert gave the film 3.5 out of 4 stars.
James Berardinelli criticized the film as a collection of anecdotes without depth. Schnabel's portrayal of the psychological conflicts and influences that led to Basquiat's excessive drug use are, in the opinion of the critic, portrayed more convincingly in other films and left him indifferent in this film. In addition, the director's self-portrayal as "Albert Milo" gives the film an unpleasant aftertaste. The performance of the actors Jeffrey Wright, Claire Forlani and David Bowie was praised . Berardinelli gave the film 2.5 stars out of 4.
“Portrait of the New York artist Jean-Michael Basquiat (1960–1988), who rose from an unknown graffiti sprayer to a celebrated star of the art scene in the 80s. Without delving too deeply, the film introduces the artist and his environment and is particularly interested in the dark side of the genius, whose motives are never critically questioned. A cinematic monument for connoisseurs of contemporary art, the film will hardly be accessible to many others. "
