Jiny Lan 2017

Jiny Lan ( Chinese  蓝 镜 , Pinyin Lan Jing , born May 3, 1970 in Xiuyan , Liaoning Province , People's Republic of China ) is a German visual artist of Chinese origin. After graduating from the Chinese University of the Arts in Hangzhou , she emigrated to Germany in 1995 . She currently commutes between these two countries and exhibits worldwide. As a founding member of the “Bald Girls”, the first feminist group of women artists in Chinese history , she is considered to be one of the representatives of feminist art in China . Her works include painting , performances , installations and videos .

Life

Jiny Lan grew up in Liaoning Province . She began painting at the age of six and from 1976 to 1986 attended the painting school in the Xiuyan Cultural Center , Liaoning Province, under the direction of Liu Renjie. Liu Renjie moved to the Lu Xun Art Academy in Shenyang , Liaoning Province in 1984 . Jiny Lan's artistic contact with Liu Renjie remained. From August 29 to September 24, 2006, she took part in the group exhibition From 'Polar Region' to 'Tie Xi Qu - Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Northeast China (1985-2006) at the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou , China , at the u. a. Liu Renjie was also among the exhibited artists.

After leaving school in 1988 Jiny Lan studied from 1988 to 1991 economics at the University of Bohai in Jinzhou , Province Liaoning . This was followed by her studies at the China Academy of Fine Arts Zhejiang from 1991 to 1994 . Since a second degree in China is no longer financed by the state, she earned her living with architecture , poster and advertising painting. From 1994 to 1995 she was an art editor at People's Daily in Beijing .

She then emigrated to Germany in 1995 . The passport authorities inadvertently entered Jiny instead of Jing in her passport, so that Jiny has since become her real first name.

From 1997 to 2002 Jiny Lan was enrolled at the University of Dortmund for a teacher training course in the subjects of art and English .

In 1999 she received German citizenship . Until 2005 she made many trips a. a. to London , Paris , New York and Italy to get acquainted with western culture . While traveling, she made her living by painting portraits .

From 2006 to 2009 she worked as a project coordinator for the Museum Schloss Moyland Foundation . In 2013 she was co-curator at the first Joseph Beuys exhibition in China - Social Sculpture: Beuys in China; 2013, July 9-11.15 at the CAFA Museum (The Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum) in Beijing . Against the background of these experiences, Joseph Beuys and Fluxus influenced their further artistic work.

Together with the Chinese artists Xiao Lu and Li Xinmo, she founded the feminist artist group Bald Girls in 2012 . In the first Bald Girls exhibition in Beijing at the Iberia Center for Contemporary Art, her work of art Collective Efforts - Red Sun had to be removed by order of the secret police shortly before the exhibition opened. Jiny Lan presented herself as Jiang Quing , Mao Zedong's widow , who was sentenced to life imprisonment after Mao's death and who committed suicide in prison a few years later. Because of this censorship , Jiny Lan drew the attention of international media such as The New York Times .

Jiny Lan lives with her family in Bochum and works both at home in Bochum and in her studio in Düsseldorf . She regularly commutes between China and Germany .

Her painting style of "Um-Malungsmanöver" has become something of a trademark of Lan. She continued the theme of the work Collective Efforts - Red Sun , which fell victim to censorship in 2012, as part of her solo exhibition One-Person Choir in the Museum NRW-Forum. In downtown Düsseldorf and along the motorway, Jiny Lan had 56 T18 advertising posters and 108 DIN A0 posters set up. The motif was the same that had been banned in China, but hardly had any effect in Düsseldorf.

A short time later, Lan painted a male sex organ on her own nude picture for a benefit auction of the women's organization Terre des Femmes in the Berlinische Galerie. This previously unannounced action caused some unrest among the Christie's auctioneer . The TV presenter and publicist Roger Willemsen offered Jiny Lan the opportunity to explain her motivation for this act: against the unconscious perception of women as an object. Nobody bought the picture. The artist later donated the work to the Berlin office of Terre des Femmes.

2014 organized Lan opening of the group show Single Moms in the Women's Museum Bonn a performance during which they before audience on one of her paintings, the Chinese philosopher Confucius , into a female representing the male sex organ painted to- . She let Confucius give birth to "his 81 generations of successors" in the form of baby dolls.

In the summer of 2017, Lan staged the performance “Eyewitnesses wanted for forgery” at the Museum Kunstforum Wien as part of her solo exhibition . In front of an audience she painted the head of the Federal Chancellor candidate Sebastian Kurz on a nude portrait of her husband. The action generated wide media coverage.

"Masterpieces", oil on canvas, 2019, title: Jörg Immendorf - Monkey goes to Heaven

In 2019 Jiny Lan painted the series “Meisterwerke”, in which she portrayed eight of the most important German visual artists of the post-war period in her very own way: Joseph Beuys , Sigmar Polke , AR Penck and Jörg Immendorf , Gerhard Richter , Markus Lüpertz , Georg Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer . On the one hand, this series of pictures is a homage that she painted with her own, sometimes ironically broken, feminist view of these great artists. On the other hand, through the selection of those portrayed, it provides historical evidence of what German artists have contributed to the international art scene and history through their work. The “masterpieces” are not portraits in the classical sense, but works of observation and analysis of German culture by Jiny Lan. The “masterpieces” were first shown in the “Parallel” exhibition in the Ludwiggalerie Schloss Oberhausen from September 2019, then in the “Genealogies” exhibition in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice at the same time as the 58th Biennale , which was taking place in parallel . The series received a lot of national and international attention.
