Antonio González Velázquez

He came from a family of artists. His father Pablo González Velázquez (1664-1727) was a baroque sculptor who came to Madrid in 1702. In addition to Antonio, the sons Luis and Alejandro were painters, who often painted together for churches and theater decorations. Antonio later painted with his brothers too.

He studied in the preparatory class for drawing at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, from which he received a scholarship to study with Corrado Giaquinto in Rome from 1747 to 1752 . In 1748 he painted various paintings and frescoes for the church of Santissima Trinità degli Spagnoli, which made him famous. On his return he painted frescoes for the Basilique de Nuestra Señora del Pilar in Saragossa .

In 1757 he became court painter to Ferdinand VI. and was involved in the painting of the Royal Palace in Madrid. At the same time he painted with his brother Luis in the church of the convent of La Visitacion (S. Barbara) in Madrid, in the church of La Encarnacion, the church of the Descalzas Reales and the Salesas Reales, the churches of S. Isabel, S. Ana and S. Justo y Pastor in Madrid. In 1765 he became director of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.

Towards the end of his life he was involved in the creation of cardboard boxes for the Royal Gobelin Manufactory (as did Anton Raphael Mengs and Francisco Bayeu ).

His son Zacarias (1763-1834) was also a painter and from 1819 director of the academy; his son Isidro (1765-1829) was an architect.
