Hakola has mainly participated in the Scandinavian Cup since 2009 , in which he mainly placed in the midfield. He ran his first World Cup race in Lahti in March 2012 , where he finished 74th in the sprint. In the same month he became Finnish champion over 50 km classic. In February 2014 he won the Finlandia-hiihto classic over 32 km. He got his first World Cup points in March 2014 in Lahti with tenth place in the sprint. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun , he came in 38th place in the 50 km classic mass start race and ninth place in the sprint. In the 2015/16 season he took 57th place at the Nordic Opening in Ruka and 44th place at the 2016 Tour de Ski . His best result of the season in the World Cup was eighth in the sprint stage in Oberstdorf . In the 2016/17 season he made it into the points 11 times in the World Cup. At the beginning of February 2017 he became the Finnish sprint champion in Keuruu . At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti, he finished sixth in the sprint. At the end of the season he achieved 17th place in the World Cup final in Québec and reached 34th place in the overall World Cup and 17th place in the Sprint World Cup. At the Finnish championships in Kontiolahti at the end of March 2017 , he won over 30 km classic and took third place over 10 km freestyle. In the 2017/18 season he finished in the top ten five times in the World Cup and came fourth four times. In addition, he clinched his first classic victory in the Scandinavian Cup in Vuokatti over 15 km and finished 19th in the overall World Cup and fifth in the Sprint World Cup at the end of the season. In January 2018 he became Finnish champion in skiathlon in Hakunila . At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he finished 43rd in the 50 km mass start race, ninth with Martti Jylhä in the team sprint and sixth in the sprint.
In the 2018/19 season, Hakola finished 28th in the Lillehammer Triple and 13th in the World Cup finals in Québec, making it 28th in the overall World Cup. He was also third in the team sprint in Lahti together with Iivo Niskanen . His best results at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tirol were 15th place in the sprint and fourth place in the relay. In December 2019 he finished third in the team sprint in Planica together with Joni Mäki .
